A Day in the Life...DUCKS!!! / Saturday, October 31

Quiet Time...

...and then we started right into our adventure for the day...DUCKS!!!

Lanny started building the duck house first thing this morning and as soon as I fed Mom and Dad their lunch we headed to Knoxville to pick up our new feathered friends...

They were living in a small pen with limited accommodations and lots of mud...anyway, they are ours now and their entire world is gonna change!

So, to make a long story short, we picked them up and brought them home...introduced them to the chickens, who were not impressed...all the dogs except Skipper (he barked most of the day) were also unconcerned, but the ducks were in HEAVEN!!! I don't know if they'd ever really foraged, eat grass or run around such a big area... I am very happy that we brought them home...a real rescue!!

It took four of us to round them up and get them into their new house, but I think they are going to love it and I'd say after a day or two they will go right in...well, that's my dream. It was fun to herd them tho, so I won't mind if we have to do that now and then :-)

Now we are showered and ready for snacks and a movie... Wonder Woman!!!

Plans were drawn before dawn and he started right to work...

On our way to rescue some ducks!

The chickens and the ducks seem to be compatible...

The ducks stay very close to each other...

...the view from my kitchen window...

Willie is not as upset as I thought he'd be...

The chickens are in  their coop and the ducks are in their box and all is well in our little world...

Goodnight Y'all....

A Day in the Life / Friday, October 30

Quiet Time...

It's still wet and it's pretty cold! I guess the warm days are over for now...

We went down the hill to pick up a few things we couldn't get at Costco and Gordons and Lanny picked up some stove pipe and accessories to finish putting in the wood stove out in his shop. Wendy found some canning jars at Kroger's so we rushed over and got a couple dozen. They are not easy to find right now.

We are preparing to rescue 5 ducks tomorrow so we are thinking about housing if they don't want to cohabitant with our chickens... also thinking about feeding and water. Ducks are messier than chickens and have a few different needs, even tho they will eat the same layer feed. It will all work out but I am sure that tomorrow won't be totally smooth running. I don't know how Willie is going to react to ducks in the coop :-)

Not sure what is on the schedule for our viewing pleasure, but I will let you know... Lanny is still out working on the stove and I am ready to settle down on the couch...maybe light the fire...we shall see :-)

Still can't find rings and lids but hopefully those items will be back in stock by the time I need them..I will keep my eyes out (and Wendy does too :-) )

These five ducks will be brought over here to our house tomorrow...I know they will be so happy to free range and have a nice cozy place to sleep at night. I hope my Rooster isn't too upset :-) The current owner says they are laying lots of eggs (there are two drakes and 3 hens...perhaps we will even have some ducklings next spring!). I'm excited, but also nervous. I've never had ducks before, but a few years ago I had never had chickens, and that has worked out just fine...

We watched World War Z...

Sweet Dreams!! :-)

A Day in the Life / Thursday, October 29

Quiet Time...

Lanny and I took a trip to Costco and Gordon's Food this morning. Still stocking the pantry. After the side of beef and todays haul I think we are pretty well stocked.

We snuck in to the Hibachi Grill for Chinese Buffet...these days grocery shopping and lunch together are a real treat!

We took a quick rest on the couch with our FurKids... a short power nap is better than nothing!

I baked a loaf of Artisan Bread for dinner...we tried some of the beef kabobs with buttered noodles...not bad, but next time I need to marinate the kabobs. They were a little tougher than we like.

I finished the bone broth and will package the last batch tomorrow. That was a messy chore but I will have about 16 quarts of rich stock for soups and other recipes this winter.

We watched "Time Machine", ate popcorn and an ice cream cone, and made it to bed early for a change...8:30.

Goodnight Y'all.....

A Day in the Life / Wednesday, October 28

Quiet Time...4:30 AM...

We brought home three huge bags of bones with our side of beef so I got busy first thing this morning making bone broth. I'm doing it in the Pressure Cooker (mine is really big). So far I have pressured the bones three times and get around 3 quarts of rich, thick bone broth with each batch. It will definitely come in handy for soup and also for those days when you just don't feel your best...a warm cup of bone broth is great medicine!!

I went down the hill to grab Sadie from the bus stop so she could spend the afternoon with us (Wednesday is a short day at school). It's pouring the rain and of course we had to run by the store for some stuff :-) but we made it back home safe and sound.... she was stuck inside but she is really good at entertaining herself especially when the pups are around...

We made Mexican for dinner and then her Mom came to take her home.

Lanny went to church for the midweek service and I tried to clean up the kitchen a bit after all that greasy bone broth I made today...it's not over either...I'll start back into the process again tomorrow morning. I will pressure the bones until they crumble apart. At that point the mushed up bones will be perfect for the dogs. Lots of nutrients still left and pretty tasty to the fur kids!

I'm watching a documentary about chimps until Lanny gets home. It will probably be too late to start a movie tonight...not sure where we will go after Back to the Future....just have to wait and see...

Goodnight Y'all...

A Day in the Life / Tuesday, October 27

Quiet Time....

Started right off prepping for Family Night...celebrating Dad's 91st. Made Banana Pudding and a Corn, Cucumber, Tomato Salad (I added Black Beans because it didn't look to be enough :-). Grabbed the rest of the left overs out of the freezer and made soup...had to make room for all the meat we brought home yesterday!!

Danny came early so he and Lanny could go out to the Big Pond and fish a little. Danny brought JR (his little Jack Russell).

Dinner with the Family and now we are settling down to watch Back to the Future 3...

Goodnight Y'all...

JR rides right up on the seat with his "Daddy"...

Family Night, October 27...A Birthday Celebration

Tonight we celebrated Daddy's 91st Birthday!! His actual day is the 30th, but it's Tuesday you know.

Sorry that the photos are all out of order...I don't want to rearrange them right now so you will just have to guess the order :-)

Daddy got a Martin barn! He loves to sit out in the drive and watch the big birds that soar above our barn...now he will have some Martin's to watch as well :-)

Banana Pudding...his favorite!

Pizza for Belle...she STILL won't eat "real" food.
I make her pizza every Tuesday, unless we have hot dogs!

Clean Out the Freezer Soup again...this time I added chicken.

Pizza for Belle...

Good friends, Wendy and Toby, joined us.
