The Chickens

One of the first things we had to do when we came up here was provide a temporary coop for the girls.  We brought seven hens with us. Oak Ridge doesn't allow roosters so we only had the hens. We used a 10x10 dog pen and large tarp and moved it several times before we found the spot we wanted. The hens loved it up here from day one!

Maggie is impressed with our new rooster Willie! He is a really sweet rooster and very gentle with the ladies. He won't eat out of my hand yet, but I have hight hopes!!

They were completely free to roam down the hill and would come back when I called and when it was time to bed down for the night. The problem was that the previous owners Great Pyrenees was still living nearby on some of their family property and didn't much care for chickens being in "her" yard. She killed two before we could fence them. We have fenced a large part of the hill for them now so they are still free to roam...just not in danger.

We finally decided on the permanent location close to the kitchen and back yard and now they are close so I can keep an eye on them and an arms throw for goodies from the kitchen!

The dogs and hens get along fine, but the dogs LOVE chicken poo...we don't let them out with the girls unless we can supervise :-)

I LOVE farm fresh eggs!

The view from my kitchen window...they love the warm rubber mat by the gate...

Admiring my feathered friends...birds AND chickens!
